There is a family of seven kookaburras living in the valley above which my house is situated. I first met one some years ago when it skewered a sandwich, which I had left for a moment on a table, with its very large beak. It appeared totally bemused as to what to do with it...so I took it back!

Since then, I've been feeding them a little most days, but it's very rare to see the whole family, particularly all lined up outside my kitchen door. This picture was taken on one of the few occasions six of them decided to wait patiently for their meal (not sandwiches!). Today was sad though: it hailed heavily and two of them sat there, drenched, for a long time, waiting for me.

The garden is fairly large and attracts many other birds as well. Amongst the trees, there's a collection of native and exotic plants, including the Agapanthus. It's quite a lovely flower but, sadly, it's also a pest because it spreads everywhere and chokes out other plants, particularly the natives. It grows massive, spider-like roots and is herbicide resistant, so without destroying the entire garden to get rid of it, the only thing one can do to slow the spread is pull out seedlings and cut off the dead flowers: a rather massive annual task. I wrote this poem on a fine day when I was tackling at least a portion of them:

A SKY BLUE MEDITATION
-----------------------------

Agapanthus...
What an inspired name for an invader.
Brought into our gardens by invitation:
Out of Africa, indeed...

One thousand blue spheres atop fleshy leaves
that bleed when cut,
and vast roots - spiders -
that cling stubbornly to the hillside.

Love and hate: the stuff of poetry.
A metaphor of life.
A sky blue meditation as I cut off the stalks
before their seeds can set.

Next year they will flower again
and I will cut off their heads once more,
Against the tide
of stealth.

Oh I love them!!! The looks on their faces are priceless, like, "Where is that sandwich and how long do we have to sit here before we get it?!" hahaha... Great shot and I think your garden is absolutely beautiful! :D

Hi! Thanks for the dA watch  and the comment on the kookaburras....they keep me entertained most days ;) ...I now have other birds to feed as well - butcher birds and currawongs (native) who are not as tame as the kookaburras. I have to be very 'strategic' in my feeding tactics so that they get a fair share. While a kookaburra swallows their food whole, the others pick it apart, so take a lot longer to get anything to eat. It gets pretty noisy at times too, particularly at dawn...the chorus is *very* loud so I use ear plugs to get back to sleep....luckily the flock of cockatoos that lives in the valley doesn't circle my house too often ( I don't feed them) as they louder than a 747 jet!! They occasionally tear the tops of the gum trees apart .... they have a sense of humour, I believe.

Hehehe, I have earplugs myself for the masses of song birds that collect in my yard each morning... hehehe.. Alone, they are pretty quiet but the group of them can get quite loud, although, I think your 747 level is a bit louder...

I mostly have Gold Finches, White Crowned Sparrows, Juncos, Blue Jays (Scrub Jays) and then the hummers... :D Every Spring a few Pigeon Hawks enter the picture... They like to eat the little birds so I am sorta torn with the fact that I love the Hawks and look forward to seeing them but I also get a bit sad when I see them chasing my cute little Finches... hehehe... So goes the cycle of life I suppose.

Most days (USA Time) I have a streaming webcam pointed outside at the birds if you are up late or interested... :) My website is at this [link] (just hit the "CAM" link once there.) If the streaming cam is black, I either forgot or forgot to turn it on.. hehehe... :p

Thanks for the lovely image of your back yard... I enjoy the diveristy the different sides of our planet give us... :D

OH I'm so glad you like my site! :D Thanks!

Yeah, I had a feeling that the cam wouldn't be on when you where up during the day... I usually turn it on from about 11 am to 6 pm here in America and figured that would be just abou the time you would be alseep... I guess if you are ever up pulling an all nighter, give it a try... hehehe...

Thanks again for the copliment on almostamazing.com..

We have kookas at our house as well, they have the dog well and truly spooked, I just love them. In addition, we have Major Mitchells, galahs, yellow crested cockies, mountain lorikeets, owls and lovely looking birds with blue wings, red singlets and blue underpants (well, that is what they look like!) Thanks for this photo, it is truly delightful.

Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in one pretty and well preserved piece. Rather, it is to slide across the finish line sideways - thoroughly used up - wrinkled like a prune - screaming "Geronimooo!"
I'm delighted you like it! They spook the dog :jawdrop: :wow: My goodness you have a lot of birds....how wonderful, if even noisier in the morning than my place....quite a concerto at daybreak, and then they carry on to get me out to feed them  There's a website I found that *might* help you with your blue and red dressed bird - love your description!
