Since 2009, I have published a three-book series of science fiction novels which are primarily set in Australia of the 25th century, but which also feature such countries as Myanmar, Switzerland and Argentina. The first book, 'The Cicada'
, is set in Melbourne, and centres on the lives of a group of research scientists who become the focus of a series of attempted murders. The aim of the book is to paint a vivid picture of a society that has survived horrific wars, the onslaught of climate change, and the repercussions of uncontrolled population growth. However, despite an overall optimistic view of the way in which the world has finally recovered, there are still those who wish to hold power over others and to control world events. It is a mystery for those who enjoy in-depth plots and cliche-free stories, with a touch of romance, as well as unusual characters, including telepathic cats, who play a major role.
The second book in the series, 'A Death In The Making'
, is essentially a murder mystery, set mainly in Brisbane and Argentina. Again, the cats play an important part, and many of the characters introduced in the first book are once again featured, with their roles being further developed. The mystery is unusual in that the character of the murder victim is fully explored in such a way that they become central to the book. Links are also made back to 'The Cicada', including those of the romantic variety.
Finally, the third in the series, 'The Seed Gatherers'
, which is also a mystery set in Melbourne, resolves the final questions raised in the first book, while introducing a new theme; that of unforeseen repercussions. This time, we know who commits the crime/s, but not initially why, and certainly not their outcome. Once again, I have included telepathic cats, and couldn't resist introducing a new romantic theme
but hopefully one that isn't run-of-the-mill, and one which hopefully will provoke both an emotional and an intellectual response in the reader.
All three books are available worldwide in epub, Kindle and pdf eBook formats, as well as in paperback. They are also available from Lulu.com:www.lulu.com/shop/search.ep?co…
eBook versions of 'The Cicada' trilogy can be obtained from Smashwords as well:www.smashwords.com/books/view/…My fourth publication is a 32-page colour-illustrated chidren's book, 'Boggle the Gymboot Bird'.The story is about a young kookaburra who can't fly, so his aunt gives him a new pair of shoes, but he soon gets himself into trouble. Fortunately, forest animals come to his rescue and he makes some new friends.
The book is a combined effort, with the hand-drawn illustrations by Lucy Gao; the story, photography and book artwork by yours truly - me
- and the editor is an American friend and professional author, Kathryn Deering. The main character is based on a wonderful papier-mâché and resin sculpture created by Graeme Davis, given to me as a much appreciated Christmas present during the mid-1970s.
